P R N D 1 2 3 L? stand for in car transmissions?

What do the gears P, R, N, D, 1, 2, 3, and L mean on a car's transmission? Specifically, I’m unsure about the purpose of 1, 2, 3, and L. Can someone explain their functions?

P = park

R = reverse

N = nuetral

D = Drive – It allows the transmission to work it’s way up through 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears as the car picks up speed.

1 – 2 – 3 limit the transmission to only go to that gear, this is helpful for gaining traction, moving heavy loads, or limiting your speed. Usually you only find “3” on a vehicle with a 4th gear, sometimes called overdrive. L is found on older cars. It stands for low and is similar to the limitation of 1-2.

Your “automatic” transmission seems to have 5 gears in it. It just shifts it for you based on what the computer thinks the right range should be.

The 1,2,3,L are shift points you can use to manually set the gear you want to be in.
