Physics question concerning a Modified Atwood Machine?
On a modified Atwood machine (such as this one: http://spiff.rit.edu/classes/phys311/workshops/w5b), suppose the hanging mass is m2 = 254 g and the mass of the cart is m1 = 1205 g. Assume there is no friction in the system, and the system starts at rest. Use g = 9.81 m/s².
a) What is the acceleration of the system? (Please provide the answer in m/s².)
b) What is the tension in the string? (Please provide the answer in N.)
c) If the track has a length of L = 2.02 m, what is vf, the speed of the cart just before it hits the barrier? (Please provide the answer in m/s.)
I understand that you need to use the equation Vf² = Vi² + 2ad for the third question, but how do I find the answers to questions a and b?
