PIIX3 or ICH9 chipset for virtual machine?

I'm playing with Oracle virtual box and I'm just wondering which chipset I should use? What's the difference as far as performance?

all i know is these two chips are south-bridge chip. and PIIX3 is earlier than ICH9. maybe this control the interface to access harddisk .

Sounds like your using Oracles VirtualBox Virtual Machine Manager. The PIIX3 is a Southbridge (an input output controller hub) Chipset made in 1996 for the Pentium Processors back in the day. The Southbridge Chip controls the slower parts of the computer (again its a hub) between sound cards, hard disks, cd drives, modems, IDE, ISA, etc... Oracle recommends that you use the PIIX3 chipset emulation for your Virtual Machine because they have worked on the PIIX3 emulation and its pretty polished. The Southbridge ICH9 (input output controller hub 9) is newer than the PIIX3 Chipset. It came out around 2006 to 2007. During the Intel Pentium dual cores. Core Duo, etc... Oracle states that their ICH9 emulation is experimental (it still needs allot of work). So they are still trying to emulate it better. If you want you Virtual Machine to work well, stick with the PIIX3 emulation for now, but that doesn't mean you can't try the ICH9 emulation. Try it, if it works, than cool...

I would recommend you to install them NOT on VIRTUAL MACHINE as vista would use ram and the other OS will also use some RAM which will slow down ur PC.If u want 2 run the OS then install them on another partition.If u want to intall on virtual pc then i recommend u to have higher than 2ghz processor, 2 or 3 gb ram ,and 256 mb video card(graphics card). And answer to ur question install windows 7 its very good.Email me if uwant to know how to install ubuntu without partitioning.
