shattered cartilage? I don’t know?

I got my cartilage pierced yesterday with a gun. While it looks fine, I've come across information suggesting that cartilage can shatter during the piercing process. How can I tell if my cartilage is shattered? What signs should I look for, and is there anything I should be concerned about?

You can’t shatter the cartilage but you can make it collapsed by getting it pierced with a gun. It happened to me. Cartilage is harder tissue than normal skin on your earlobes so when you pierce it with something that has pressure like a gun it can cause air to become trapped in the healing piercing and form a hard bump, not a soft one. You will know it is collapsed after when it heals and you take it out and there is a hard bump on the back. Its not that big of a deal but it can make you prone to infections. After 6 years I had to take my cartilage piercing out because it kept getting randomly sore due to the bump. I am getting it redone on my other ear except this time it will be at a tattoo place where they will use a needle and needles are better for cartilage because they don’t have the same pressure that causes collapse.

Flick your nose. Feel that rubbery stuff? That’s cartilage. Have you ever seen anything that squishy shatter? Ever been eating meat and bite into cartilage? You can literally chew on that crap without even denting it.

You didn’t shatter your cartilage BUT getting a piercing with a gun is still a bad idea because it’s impossible to disinfect them properly and you are much more likely to get an infection. Be sure to follow the care instructions exactly. You’re very at risk.

Um Contrary to what the other answerers say, your ear can shatter. Unless your ear starts to show signs of infection (hot to the touch, green-ish puss) you really don’t need to worry, just don’t get pierced with a gun anymore. Also, one more thing that may help with the healing is going to a professional and having a ring switched out for the post. The post is typically not the best quality, nor is it long enough for any swelling that may happen.

No..I got mine done today.

I even asked the piercer before I got mine done and she said there’s no such thing as “shattered cartilage”. It’s an internet myth to scare people out of doing it.

Don’t worry.
