Water Shoes for Dogs?
I own a beach house on the sound side of Emerald Isle, NC. One of the best aspects of visiting our house is the enjoyment our dogs get from swimming and playing in the sound. However, the water is filled with oyster shells that are as sharp as razor blades. We have a strict rule that no one goes swimming without water shoes, but we don’t have a solution for the dogs. I have purchased water shoes for them (similar to this: http://www.amazon.com/All-Purpose-Dog-Shoes-X-smal…), but they lasted only about 30 seconds in the mucky water, and the dogs really disliked them.
Does anyone else face this problem? I have spent around $400 on vet bills due to cuts on my dogs' paws. My vet has advised me to remove the dogs from this environment, but that is a last resort for my family. I would be willing to invest in shoes if they were guaranteed to work. Alternatively, is there a type of sealant I could apply to their paws before they enter the water? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I lived off of the Albemarle sound, and understand the whole oyster shell problem.
I’ve used a number of boots over the years http://www.dogbootsactive.com/ these people will custom make boots for you, or may have a stock type that will work. Great people who will listen and help you
the other ones I’ve used come from Ugly dog https://www.uglydoghunting.com/protective.php they do stay on in water, mud, brush, muck of all sorts. The shoe repair man in town was able to glue another sole on when It got cut up too badly and we got 5 years out of one set.
There are trainging techniques that you can use. Learn here https://tr.im/uPp6S
HEEL:
1. A dog straining on the lead is the result of improper early heel-training. Reinstruction will be required to remedy the fauly.
2. Correct positioning ensures that the dog can anticipate the owner’s actions such as a change in direction, sudden stop or new instruction.
3. A lagging dog can also indicates bad heel training. Frequent sharp tugs on the check chain should encourage the dog to keep up with its owner.
SIT:
1. On the command ‘sit’, press the dog’s hindquarters firmly down with your left hand while keeping the dog’s head supported in the air.
2. Keep the lead taut in the right hand, giving it a slight upwards pull as you press the hindquarters down to help the dog respond.
3. Crouching down beside, but not over, the dog may prove helpful in teaching more unruly dogs to perform the exercise.
SIT STAY:
1. Pul the dog in the sit position by holding your hand up in front of the dogs face and giving the command ‘ sit’ in a firm voice.
2. Then move in the front of the dog jerking on the check chain if any attempt is made to move. If the dog does move, start agian.
3. Keeping your hand high up in front of the dog, and repeating the command ‘stay’, back off bit by bit, increasing the space between you.
SPEAK:
1. Tell the dog to speak, if he doesnt, the owner must bark to encourage the dog to bark
2. soon enough the dog will bark

Dog water shoes:

(these are disposable, but might not be sturdy enough [could possibly be cut through by oysters])http://www.amazon.com/PAWZ-Disposable-Reusable-Boo…

You can check on Amazon, and read reviews, etc.
I wouldn’t suggest letting your dogs in the water without some kind of shoes on- it could be very dangerous for the, just like us!
Badly enough, dogs dont like wearing shoes, so chances are they wont want to wear any kind. i have never used any before, so im not sure which ones are suitable. you really should keep them away if no suitable ones are found
Good Luck
