What are the different ways to say “I love you” in Japanese and when do you use them?
I often hear various expressions of love when watching different anime, and I come across others when searching online. The only phrases I know are “aishiteru” and “daisuki,” if I’m not mistaken. Could you please explain the different ways to say “I love you” in Japanese and the contexts in which each is used?

literally ”I love you” is “Aishitemasu”.
but you should know this. even many Japanese don’t know this. believe it or not the idea of “I love you” is imported from the west during the Meiji era(1868-1912).
I’m Japanese. and it can be said that we have much fewer opportunities to say it. as for me I’ve never said it to anyone in my family. I think this is true for many of us.
when we make a declaration of love, we use “suki” more often.
suki desu.
suki dayo.
suki da.
suki yo.
maybe where you hear “aishieru” most often is music lyrics. I believe it’s not a day to day word.
