Yes and no.Howell (and Livingston County in general) is well known to be a racist / backwoods area. There is a good number of the ‘Michigan Militia’ types, and good ol’ boy types too. You get quite a bit of that in any of the more rural areas in Michigan (or anywhere).However, the KKK has mostly died out and while I’m sure there are some KKK members who live in Howell, it’s not infested with them. There has been too much growth in the area for it to stay a completely redneck white place.

It is not infested with KKK but without a doubt is an absurdly racist area. People commented that unless you are blasting gangster rap you will be fine… That’s racist on its own. The whole judicial system is corrupted. We moved from Wayne county last year and I am married to a black man. He has been constantly harassed by police and neighbors. I even get stared at when I have our mixed race daughter out in public. It’s an awful place to be, the old hillbilly type like it out here to be around their kind but don’t want any other races around. It’s sicken and I have a friend in local newspapers that is digging into the issues. Sickening anybody standing up for this place probably waives a confederate flag off the back of their ’92 ford pickup smh

Don’t know about Howell, though I think there are pockets fiew and far between in eastern Michigan. I heard the worst area is in the thumb, but I could be wrong. Read on Wiki that a close by town is/was home to the Michigan KKK.

It’s the town of Cohoctah, MI. Just outside of howell. It’s all farm land and backwoods. Howell itself isn’t a racist town. Cohoctah falls into Howells school districts though.

Depending upon where you go down there, it’s possible that you may get some odd looks from the older people. But it’s been years since I’ve heard of any KKK-type activity near there.

No, many years ago and I mean many the headquarters as you say was close to Howell, it is hype from the media Howell actually is trying really hard to snuff the rumours… The KKK is a dying breed all they are now is some hillbillies idiots that think it truly still exists, you have racist people everywhere you go no matter what city including Detroit!!

I have lived and worked in Howell many years. I worked at a non-profit shelter in Howell and I know we had a lot of women from Detroit in our shelter who said they would walk down the road and gets racial slurs yelled at them. I however know there is no KKK in Howell. There may be people who practice it but the group is not in Howell.
