The subject of Hendrix and drugs has long been muddled, partly because some members of Hendrix’s family long insisted that he had never taken any drugs at all, but mostly because the man isn’t around to set the record straight himself. (Asked in 1970 if he had “outgrown dope,” seven months before his untimely overdose of barbituates, Hendrix replied, “I don’t take as much.”) But some fans relish the notion that his technique for taking drugs was as inventive as his guitar playing: a popular rumor has long been that he would conceal LSD under his headband and let it enter his body through the pores of his forehead. (The story has variations: sometimes it’s heroin or cocaine that Hendrix had under the headband; sometimes he’s supposed to have cut his brow to get the drugs into his bloodstream faster.)

While it’s not completely impossible to dose yourself with acid that way–you can get a contact high from handling sheets of blotter acid, and some people have been known to ingest liquid LSD through their eyes–frankly, it would have been a lot of needless effort for Hendrix when he could just have taken the acid orally before going onstage. So you won’t find any source on this rumor more reliable than the older brother of some guy you took wood shop with in junior high; Hendrix experts don’t lend the story any credence. Jim Fricke, for example, senior curator at the Experience Music Project, the Seattle rock museum with an extensive Hendrix collection, is familiar with the headband rumor, but told me, “I have never heard any backup for that story.”

He definitely didn’t “soak” his headband in LSD, as that would be an insanely high, literally physically and mentally debilitating dose, unless you were to drop 30 or so doses into a 2-quart pitcher of water, dip the band and end up with a few doses actually in your system. This is not something people do. Jimi Hendrix may have placed a couple of hits under the band on his forehead but I doubt he would do that. It’s a novel idea and it sounds cool, but that’s what urban myths are all about. He probably ate acid before shows though.

James is right…it’s just odd to see this in the country section! Here, we like Jerry Reed, Chet Atkins, Brad Paisley, Merle Travis, Roy Clark, Brent Mason, Albert Lee and John Jorgenson, plus a few other great country pickers! Anyway, I wouldn’t doubt that Jimi Hendrix did that, since he was a druggie (no offense meant to him or any of his fans). I must say that, in all honesty, Hendrix is still extremely overrated…if Hendrix was alive today, his playing couldn’t even compare to Brad Paisley’s playing! And, another guitarist who has passed away (sometime in the 1990’s), Danny Gatton, could have outplayed Hendrix any day as well!

I heard he would put as many as 4 hits of acid INTO his headband, but not soak it in acid. I’m on a horse.

LOL, Hendrix never doing drugs is like saying Hitler never had a mustache above his lip.

no one knows for sure, but most experts seem to believe it’s not true

besides, taking acid topically is very difficult

I don’t know about that one, I heard that he wore the headband because he used to shoot up in the veins on his forehead, and obviously had to hide them.

I guess we will never know. But honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised.
