Is it unfair for community service hours to be important for students?
Is it unfair for community service hours to be a significant factor for students? Some colleges and scholarship programs consider the number of hours a high school student has dedicated to volunteering, such as participating in beach cleanups or organizing fundraisers for their school. However, what about students who have part-time jobs or lead busy lives? Is it reasonable to expect them to complete 40 hours of community service?

Many places have a requirement for high schoolers to do community service (often 40 hours) in order to graduate. This is to help integrate people into the community, which some see as important as actual knowledge. In these places, if you don’t do it – for whatever reason, you don’t graduate. Universities know this.
