Is this sentence correct? (North America)“I hope you had a great New Year.”?
Hello everyone,
I am drafting a formal email to a contact in the United States and would like to confirm if the following sentence is both correct and appropriate: "I hope you had a great New Year."
For context, I last spoke with this contact on December 29th, and I am now following up with them.
Thank you in advance for your help!

Yes, strictly speaking, but you could improve it in a few ways. One is: I hope your New Year's observance was great. Another is: I hope the New Year is off to a great start for you.

No. You'd either say, "I hope you had great New Year's Eve," or say, "I hope you had a great New Year's Day." When you say "happy new year" to someone, you're wishing them well for the entire year. You wouldn't say that you hope they had a great new year because that would be the entire year and the year isn't over yet.
