IT wise how long should business tell IT of a new location and to set it up?
Hi, I’m a local IT technician at a company, and recently there has been a change in office management, which has been quite challenging. I am the only IT person at the local office, while the rest of the network and server team is located elsewhere. My salary is $45,000 a year, which is more aligned with helpdesk roles.
I was informed just a week and a half after the opening of a brand new, large warehouse that everything needed to be ready immediately. To complicate matters, the site lacks any internet service providers, as it is situated in a rural area on the outskirts of the city. We are currently relying on a cellular network for connectivity.
During this time, I have faced significant pressure and criticism for not having the internet, phone lines, and all necessary equipment set up for the site to function properly. Is this typical timing for such a project? I would have expected at least 3 to 4 months of advance notice, or at least 1 to 2 months in a rush scenario. Additionally, my colleagues seem to expect me to act as the IT project manager, even though my role is primarily to fix computers. Unfortunately, none of my managers are willing to take responsibility for the situation, likely because they understand the tight timeline and the difficulties posed by the current office management. I fear that if there are repercussions, I will be the one held accountable.
Is this a normal timeframe for such a setup, or am I justified in my concerns? The warehouse is 600,000 square feet and includes a small office, and they want Wi-Fi for scanners throughout the warehouse, as well as in an adjacent warehouse. However, they are reluctant to pay for two separate connections.

While I haven’t done anything like this in years I would have thought that pulling all this together PROPERLY could be done in 6 – 8 weeks. But you need to get the experts in, have access to finance etc. Above all you actually need a pretty detailed spec of what they want – so that’s actually 6-8 weeks for implementation! You’d need all the paperwork, and compatibility info too; so if you need to do all that then yeah 3 months might not be unreasonable!
