My boyfriends joining the marines…what to expect?

My boyfriend of almost two years has decided to join the Marines after we graduate high school. This will happen in about a year, or possibly longer if he chooses to wait a bit. I'm wondering what I can expect if this comes to fruition. I know that the initial training lasts for about 9 weeks, followed by a commitment of 4 years of service. I plan to stay with him and support him throughout this journey. I don't want to be selfish while he is dedicating himself to help our country. What should I anticipate in terms of our relationship and his experience in the Marines?

Hey hun! Good for you that youre supporting him 🙂 My hubby went in right after graduation and now we are 21 and happily married for almost 2 years! Your boyfriend will be in for 4 years but by “gone” if you mean deployed? no way! he will be deployed probably a few times for around 7 months at a time but not for the whole 4 years lol. he will be stationed somewhere on a base and get paid usually the 1st & 15th of every month. his pay rate depends on rank, years of service, # of dependents, things like that. if you two decide to get married, you will get benefits and stuff..(its too much to go into on here) you will be able to live with him either on base or off. the quality of housing on base depends on where youre stationed..most of it isnt terrible, but you should look for apartments off base and exhaust that option before settling for on base housing. if you do not want to get married he will have to get permission to move off base and pay for it out of pocket instead of getting money for housing. its really up to you but if you plan on staying with him through it all it makes life alot easier to get married. the military does not recognize girlfriends or even fiances unfortunately so it gets difficult at times for un-married couples. hope this helped, if you have any other questions feel free to email me i was in ur shoes only a few years ago! good luck to you both and best wishes to your boyfriend on his decision! hope it all works out for you! xo

My boyfriends joining the marines…what to expect?

My boyfriend of almost two years has made the decision to join the marines after we graduate high-school. That will be in a year [or maybe longer, if he waits a little bit], but I’m just wondering what I can expect if that does happen. I already know about the first training being 9 weeks and…

Ok, to answer your questions…

First, He will be “gone” for four years, however, he may be stationed at a base in your state, but realize that he will be deployed potentially for up to 8 months to a country we are currently at war with.

Second, He will get paid, I believe the pay rate right now for enlisted marines is around 1.2k a month

Third, You will still be supporting yourself but he will receive a bit more money, and if you live on base with him you live pretty much for free, not sure about meals and things like that. And yes, you could live with him.

If you want more detailed answers, you could always call your local marine recruiter to ask him, or have the recruiter he is talking to talk with you, im sure he will do that as the recruiters generally will talk with anyone who is interested in their significant others / family members enlistment. Good luck to you both, and you being supportive is an intensely mature decision that you have made, good for you.

Wow lots of questions. I’ll try to answer them the best I can ?

He won’t be gone for four years straight, he will get vacations every so often. Like my boyfriend gets 1 month vacation a year.

Yes, he will get paid for going. He gets paid less for training than he does for actually serving, though.

If you end up getting married before he leaves then yes you will get financial help ?

You can live on base and they aren’t all apartments. It depends on the base but some of them have pretty nice houses.

Be sure to spend a lot of time with him before he leaves. Believe me, you’ll be glad you did. You’re going to miss him a LOT when he leaves. Be sure to write him a bunch of letters too. It’s really hard at first but it gets better every day ? Good luck!

He does get paid starting in boot camp well that’s how the army is anyways.

Depending on if your married or not before he gets in depends on the benefits. If you are married you can get on his health insurance and he will have dependents so housing allowance will be more.

You can live on base if you choose or live off base, My husband is in the army and we are choosing to live off base, Not all the places are crappy some of the places are pretty nice.

He won’t be gone all four years they do have field time, trips, and deployments but will not be gone all four years.

Military has a lot of perks! I wish you both the best!

He would have to go to Boot Camp and then to his specialty school whichever job he may choose.

He doesn’t “go away” for 4 years, he gets stationed somewhere. That can be Hawaii, Japan, or stateside. Naturally, like any job yes he gets paid! If he goes to a warzone, he gets paid more. If you two end up getting married, you will be together, unless he goes overseas (Iraq or Afghanistan) you wont have to support yourself you will be a spouse and will get help!

As far as the housing, you dont always have to live on base housing you can live off too. Also you are able to go and look at the houses before you decide to whether or not you want tolive there or not.

His first tour, recruit training, will last a minimum of 13 weeks barring physical injury. Upon his graduation he is entitled to ten days vacation before he heads to combat training or the school of infantry depending on his job (MOS). If he goes to combat training he will be there for approximately four-six weeks before heading to his MOS school which can last six weeks to one year and possibly more. If he goes to the school of infantry, he will be there much longer depending on his job title (infantry, mortar, machinegunner, etc.).

After his schooling is complete and the two of you marry, he is entitled to many benefits to bring you along. So, in short, expect a minimum of six months of training. He will not be gone for four years. In the event he is sent overseas, the tours (time away) usually last from six months to one year.

He is paid the whole time starting day one. As far as the help, he will receive money to help support the family. This allotment depends where he is stationed. You can live on base and is the preferred method because this housing costs the government less. Even when he is away, you stay in the house.

actually I believe the training is 12 or 13 weeks. and it can be four or five years depending on what he signs up for. Yes he will come home on leave. yes he will get paid by salary. If they got paid by the hour, they’d be millionaires. they do receive extra money when they get married. I think the base living situation varies from base to base but you can live out in town with him. I hope this helps.

Marines go to war or train to do so. If you marry one be prepared for many lonely days. There is base housing, he does get paid, you have medical care and can make it if you are frugal. All 3 of my wives did. You never really know when or how long he will be home, so: Semper Fidelis.
