Quotations From the Book
What the three doctors have to say about the Pact--
"We knew we'd never survive if [becoming doctors] we went after it alone. And so we made a pact: we'd help one another through no matter what" (2).
"The pact filled us with motivation and purpose, giving us a reason to keep pushing when it would have been easier just to give up. It provided us with a firm base of support, and it strengthened us to face the challenges that came our way" (235).
What the three doctors have to say about peer pressure--positive and negative:
"We know firsthand that the wrong friends can lead you to trouble. But even more, they can tear down hopes, dreams, and possibilities. We know, too, that the right friends inspire you, pull you through, rise with you" (3).
"Friendship can lift you up, strengthen and empower you, or break you down, weaken and defeat you" (Sam Davis 32).
"I'd have to say that the kinds of friends I chose--positive guys who wanted to do the right thing--made a huge difference in how my life turned out" (George Jenkins 99).
What Sam [Davis] has to say about perserverance--
"If you're going through a difficult time and can't see your way out alone, you should consider asking for help" (210).
"I've come to believe that every goal in life is obtainable and that the only limitations are the ones you set for yourself" (211).
"When you've failed repeatedly and think you're done, that last try--the one that requires every ounce of will and strength you have--is often the one to pull you through" (211).
And, what Rameck [Hunt] has to say about giving back--
"I discovered early in my childhood that you don't need money or status to enrich another person's life. Anybody with passion and purpose can do so." (137)
"The ways to give are as boundless as your creativity" (137).
"When you give to someone else, I've found, surprisingly, that you often receive as well" (138).
