What does ‘Led Zeppelin’ mean?

When Jimmy Page was assembling the group, Keith Moon (drummer from The Who) got word of his plans and predicted the group would go down “like a lead balloon” (this is a common English expression). Bassist and keyboardist John Entwistle thought it would be “more like a lead zeppelin.” Page took the phrase and manager Peter Grant changed the spelling to “led” in order to avoid mispronunciation.

The guys talking about Keith Moon are close, but not right. In the late 60’s, Keith Moon and John Entwistle, who after being cast in the shadows of Daltrey and Townshend, often joked about leaving the Who to start their own band. Keith Moon said “that would go over like a lead zeppelin.” And that became the “band’s” name. A short while later, Jimmy Page, a good friend of the Who, heard that name from Keith Moon and Led Zeppelin was born.

It’s an oxy-moron. A “zeppelin” is another name for a blimp, or hot air balloon. It’s an oxy-moron because most likely, a lead balloon would not float.

They the band, thought their band would not fly. And it would crash and burn like the zeppelin in the I don’t know what year the zeppelin crashed and burned.
