What does meth/crack smell like when it’s cooking and when it’s being smoked?

Okay, I really need some help with this situation. I’m living in an apartment complex and just had some new neighbors move in. I’ve been here since February, under a year-long lease. Until now, I hadn’t noticed, but apparently, there is an issue in these buildings with odors traveling between units. These new neighbors are two young guys, probably in their early to mid-20s. I’m 34, married, and pregnant with my first child.

For almost the past week, our apartment has been filling up with strange odors. I had the police over the other night because I was unsure what the smell was; it was overpowering and saturating our entire apartment. The responding officer said she didn’t know what the smell was. I thought it smelled like burning plastic, while she described it as nasty incense. Unfortunately, she mentioned that she couldn’t take any action unless she smelled drugs. She was very nice and sympathetic, but there wasn’t anything she could do.

Last night, as I was napping on the couch, I awoke to an intense smell reminiscent of cheap, flowery air freshener. I tried airing out the apartment with a box fan and an open screen door, but the smell kept coming back. I realized it was also filling our entryway, a small lobby where all the doors on the floor meet. Eventually, I saw two women leaving the new neighbor’s apartment who looked quite disheveled. I asked them if they were burning incense or spraying air freshener, and they said yes. I requested they ask the tenants to stop since the odor was making me feel sick. They agreed, and I continued to air out my apartment.

A few minutes later, I started smelling a horrible burning odor. I’m unsure if it’s coming from their oven, if they’re cooking drugs (I’m not sure how that works), if they’re smoking drugs, or if they just burned something. My main concern is for my unborn baby. If it were just me, I would probably just deal with it and continue airing the apartment without worrying.

So here’s my question: what do meth and crack smell like when they’re being cooked, and what do they smell like when they’re being smoked? I need to know so that next time I call the police, I can provide a valid reason. I don’t want to waste their time or mine.
