what does {PET} mean when you are purchusing a dog from a breeder?
I am in the process of purchasing a dog, and the price is listed as $600. However, I noticed that next to the price, it says "pet." I am curious about what this designation means. Does it indicate that the price may be reduced if I agree to have the dog spayed or neutered, or is it a requirement that I must fulfill before completing the purchase?

Whether a pup is a show/breeding prospect (one that has the potential to be shown and bred) or is pet-only quality is determined before the pups are sold. This is usually done by having the pups evaluated by other breeders who are familiar with the breed.
If a dog is sold as “pet”, it means that the dog will have limited registration and must be spayed or neutered to prevent breeding. The lower price reflects the “pet-quality” designation. This does not mean it isn’t a wonderful dog, though! The breeder’s contract will usually specify that you agree to have the dog spayed/neutered.
A show-quality pup will (typically) be sold with full registration at a higher price. The breeder may stipulate that the dog is to be shown and, if titled, to be bred … and that the breeder may retain certain breeding rights to the dog and the option to acquire one or more of the dog’s future offspring.
It means exactly what it says. It’s a pet. Like the other person said, for $600 you could do so many other things- Adoption for a puppy in a shelter is 6 times less then that and they TRULY need homes asap.
a breeder will refer to their available puppies as either show quality or pet quality. this has to do with conformation that is judged in a show.
If a dog does not fit AKC American kennel club show standards he will be pet quality.. doesn’t mean he is not healthy or anything like that.
However, if you are purchasing a purebred dog.
Be sure the breeder gives a health guarantee and guarantees against genetic problems that are typical to the breed..
Not sure what those are for your breed of dog? then check out this website:

pet means that its meant to be a pet.. not to be bred or shown.
You dont get a reduced price.. that is the price of the dog because its a pet-quality and not show/breeding.
There will most likely be a spay/neuter contract, if the breeder doesnt do spay/neuter before selling.
In my contracts it means the dog is being purchased solely as a companion, on a neuter contract. It doesn’t have bearing on the quality of dogs, but refers to the intended purpose.
It means he’s pet quality not show quality. If its a good breeder they will require that you fix a pet quality dog.

It means you’d be getting a better deal buying the same breed of dog from a shelter or rescue that’s already been spayed/neutered and up to date on shots for a mere $200 or so.

It means its not show/breeding quality- probably has a spay/neuter contract, may have a fault that disqualifies it from showing
