What exactly does ‘i only want the best for you’ mean?

I've always been a bit puzzled by the saying, "I only want the best for you." Is it typically a genuine expression of care and goodwill, or is it sometimes used as a subtle way to discourage someone from a particular action or decision? What do people generally mean when they use this phrase?

Your phrase has two meanings. One : for example, when a father tells his daughter, ” I only want the best for you, ” he may try to deter her from doing something that he doesn’t approve of. Two :

the second meaning is that the statement is sincere ; for example, when a loving husband gifts an expensive diamond to his wife and says, ” I only want the best for you, ” he is real, sincere, genuine. He loves her a lot.

I've always been slightly confused by this saying. Is it just a tactful way of deterring someone from something or is it generally a sincere statement? What does one mean when they say this?

It depends how it is said. But in most cases, the sentiment is referring to someone wanting to give you the best.

However, it can sometimes be said it a manipulative way, i.e. the speaker is saying that phrase to keep the person from doing something they don’t want them to do.

This is often said by someone close to you especialy when he/she wants to show that he/she cares for you
