its a made up word…. making an “ology” out of disaster

there are a couple of posts saying what the lyrics mean on here – http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/35308221078…

The song takes alot from the movie Donnie Darko, especially a few specific parts. First they talk about a short story called “The Destructors” by Graham Greene which Donnie, in class, comments on the main theme of the book, “They say right when they flood the house and they tear it to shreds that… destruction is a form of creation,” so the fact that they burn the money is ironic. They just want to see what happens when they tear the world apart. They want to change things.” The song title seems to be taken as a derivative of the title of this book, also the line, “Can we create something beautiful and destroy it?” seems to be taken from this theme of the movie as well. Secondly the line in the song, “If every living thing dies alone. What am I doing here?”, seems to be taken directly from what Roberta Sparrow whispers in Donnies ear. She says “Every living thing on earth dies alone.” This troubles Donnie greatly in the movie and the “what am i doing here?” seems to be what PTV imagines what is going through Donnies head as he ponders the message. Several other lines allude to the movie including, “If you come over tonight, we can travel through time.” Time travel is a huge part of the movie. One more, “If it’s the end of the world,

You and me should spend the rest of it in love”, the end of the world comes after Halloween when Donnie can travel back in time to save the life of Gretchen by letting his own be taken. There are probably even more references in the song but honestly im tired of typing. My interpretation is that PTV is documenting their interpretation of Donnies thoughts through the movie. I hope this gives some people some ideas, thanks for reading.

Disasterology

This song is basically about a typical guy’s dream. It talks about girls, drinking and having the time of your life. It’s very poetic and drifts around just like a person’s mind would inside of a dream. I purposely just wrote down the first things that popped into my head. The chorus talks about building something beautiful only to destroy it. This is a very philosophical idea that I’ve played around with for a long time. I wrote most of the music in Florida with my good friend [former ADTR guitarist] Tom Denney. He and I worked on the music for this song, “The Boy Who Could Fly” and “The Sky Under The Sea.” Love you, Tom!
