What is the meaning behind the phrase “fate is a cruel mistress”?

What is the meaning behind the phrase "fate is a cruel mistress"? Additionally, are there other sayings or proverbs that convey a similar message about the nature of fate and its impact on our lives?

Well, it seems pretty self-explanatory but essentially it means that fate is fate -- nothing you can do about it and you have to take your lumps.

A similar (sort of) expression would be "Experience is the best teacher."

It's an off-shoot to the days when men had the career and women were expected to do what they must to help him be successful in it...even though she wasn't the one getting the credit. That saying was used as a way to encourage women to continue in their "helper" role by making them feel like everyone knew just how important her "job" was. It's similar to the saying "Being a stay at home mom is the most important job there is." Oh really, then why are stay at home moms considered to be unemployed by the government and why are they unable to earn Social Security benefits in this country. For such an important job, it sure doesn't seem to be getting any credit that actually counts. The traditional female role is on its way out, mostly because women have wised up and realized that they were getting the short end of the stick.
