What makes a person a veteran?

What defines a veteran? I have a general understanding of what makes someone a veteran, but I wonder if being a veteran's daughter, granddaughter, or spouse qualifies someone as a veteran. I know this might seem like a silly question, but I have encountered someone who believes they are a veteran despite never having served in the military, although they have family members who have.

You need to serve at least 6 months active duty and be honorably discharged. If you did not serve in the military you are not a veteran. I’m a veteran because I served four years active duty and saved the country from the communist threat.

I pretty much have a good idea what makes one a veteran but does being a veterans daughter or granddaughter make them one or being married to one make them a veteran. I know this is a dum question but I know someone who thinks they are a veteran and never been in the military who’s has family…

A veteran is someone who served in the military. A war veteran is a military person who served in wartime.

Families of veterans are not veterans.

It never ceases to amaze me how many dumb people thare are that know how to turn a computer on but haven’t any idea of how to use it. But they, somehow, end up in this section. No, being married to a military veteran or related to one does not MAKE you a veteran, you earn that distiction just as being a combat veteran makes you different from being a veteran that served during peacetime.

Boot Camp 1978……. Tough for some, I breezed through it… Then again I went in Varsity 3-time lettered Drill SGT was still allowed to ‘touch you’…. US Army Infantry (now retired as of 2002) Yes… made me a much better person. I know my limitations and how far I can take them. Physically, mentally, maybe even spiritually in some regards. But what I left with the service is a profound sense of concern for the people around me. I also left the Army with a “Git-R-Dun” attitude that I think more people need to follow.

No, being married to one or being a daughter etc does not qualified that person a veterans..you have to served in the military to be consider a veteran.

I think that might be taking political correctness a little too far. Men and women that were in the military and are veterans. It would cheapen the sacrifices that my friends made. The family that stayed behind have had a very hard time of it and maybe should have a designation for them that they can be proud of. While I’m on it all of us veterans are not heroes — we did our duty and a lot of heroes are dead. Also calling those people that died in the Twin Towers heroes cheapens the word. I’m sure there are some extraordinary act of heroism that happened there that we’ll never know about but those people were victims af some cowardly jerks.

No … A veteran by definition is a person who has Officially served as a member of our military and was honorably discharged at the end of term of duty. If they did not serve, they are not a veteran.

Boot camp wasnt physically tough, but mentally challenging. I’ve been serving now 5 years and I have grown more as a person because of my service then I believe I would have otherwise. My real personal growth came during my combat time.
