What’s the difference between diffusion and osmosis?
Can someone explain the difference between diffusion and osmosis? Aren’t they essentially the same process?

Diffusion is the movement of molecule from a place of high concentration to a place of low concentration through a semi-permeable membrane.
Osmosis is the movement of molecules from a place of high water concentration to a place of low water concentration through a semi-permeable membrane.
Thus the only difference is that Osmosis is to do with water.

Your answers (OOODDD) are correct. Diffusion is the movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration. Osmosis is simply the diffusion of water. The first example describes how water leaves an algal cell, the second states directly it is the movement of water, and the third is an example of net water movement into a cell that has a lower water (or higher solute) concentration inside the cell than outside. Examples 4, 5, and 6 state directly the movement of a molecule that is NOT water, so they would be describing diffusion. Hope this helps. I’m covering this with my bio classes right now, too, and most of my students always have a problem with the difference, especially in terms of what happens to the cell in hypertonic and hypotonic solutions.

In diffusion both solvent and solute can randomly flow through the membrane, since random motion tends to even things out the net result is that solute molecules flow from the side of high concentration to the side of low concentration. In osmosis only the solvent can flow through the membrane. As a result the attraction that the solvent feels for the solute pulls solvent across the membrane into the side with the most solute. this evens out the concentration of solute but in a completely different way.
osmosis has molecules passing through a permable membrane
diffusion is simply the spreading out of molecules in a fluid like ink in water
You could say osmosis is a form of diffusion through a membrane
Im pretty sure thats the definition of those words.
Diffusion is a spontaneous movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. (ex. tea flavoring moving from an area of high to low concentration in hot water.)
Osmosis is the spontaneous net movement of water across a semipermeable membrane from a region of low solute concentration to a solution with a high solute concentration, down a solute concentration gradient.
The movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane or semi-permeable membrane is called osmosis.
The movement of substances like CO2 and O2 in and out of the cell is called diffusion. This can be more of gaseous exchange.
diffusion does not need a semi-permeable membrane to occur, but osmosis requires a semi-permeable membrane.
The difference between diffusion and osmosis is that, diffusion is the movement of molecules from high to low concentration(downhill movement) along the concentration gradient and osmosis is the net movement of water along a semi-permeable membrane from low to high concentration(Uphill movement) against the concentration gradient. Also, there must be a semi-permeable membrane for osmosis while there’s none for diffusion.
