Which is the best dog food: Vitality vs. Royal Canin vs. Pedigree vs. Alpo?
I am looking for advice on the best dog food among the following brands: Vitality, Royal Canin, Pedigree, and Alpo. Unfortunately, these are the only brands available in the pet stores in my area.
Here are the links for reference:
- Vitality: http://www.advancedpetcare.com.au/dry-pet-food.asp
- Royal Canin: http://www.royalcanin.us/
- Pedigree: http://www.pedigree.com/
- Alpo: http://alpo.com/
Which of these brands is considered the best, safest, and healthiest for dogs? Thank you very much for your help!

Royal Canin diets provide precise nutritional solutions to your pet’s needs. Each of our products is based on our extensive knowledge of cats and dogs, gained through years of studies at our own centre, partnerships with leading veterinary schools and universities, and continued input from veterinarians and breeders worldwide. We’re constantly expanding and improving on this knowledge in order to keep providing your pet with food that meets their exact dietaryrequirements.
According to the only source I trust when looking for a high quality dog food,The Whole Dog Journal, here is how to find the best of the best;
First, you rank foods that appear to contain more animal protein higher than afoods that seem to be largely comprised of plant-source proteins.
Then look at the quality of the animal proteins and fats. They should be whole, named animal proteins and fats and named animal protein meals higher than generid animal proteins in other words meat or poultry and by-products such as chicken by-products or beef by-products
Then look at the grains , whole grains and vegetables, or a lot of low-cost processed food fragments..that is not good.
Finally consider the position of artificial preservatives, colors, and palatability enhancers such as sweeteners, salt, and artificial smoke flavors, they should be at the bottom if in there at all.
None of the above foods are on the recommended list by this recommended foods journal.
Solid Gold, Wellness, Drs. Foster and Smith, Canidae, Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul, Taste of the Wild,Fromm, Innova, Go!Natural grain-free are all on the list along with many others, but these are the ones easiest to find.,
You can get food delivered through Petflow.com so you have the capability to get anything you want.

I use Royal Canin and feel it’s the best. That being said, my vets says there are many good foods available. The thing I like about Royal Canin, is all of the ingredients are of a quality that would pass human consumption standards.

None of those. Go to a Walmart and get Pure Balance by Ol Roy unless you have a Runnings then you can get Nutrisource. If you really can only get those 4 foods then I would probably go with RC.
