Which way to turn your wheels uphill or downhill?

I'm preparing to take my driving test soon, and I have a few questions about parking on slopes.

  1. When parking uphill with a curb, which way should I turn my wheels?
  2. When parking uphill without a curb, which way should I turn my wheels?
  3. When parking downhill with a curb, which way should I turn my wheels?
  4. When parking downhill without a curb, which way should I turn my wheels?

I'm really confused about this! Thank you for your help!

When parking downhill, turn your steering wheel towards the curb. Your wheels will rotate clockwise and your car would roll into/over the curb if it became loose. This is preferred over letting the car roll into traffic!

When parking uphill, with a curb, turn the steering wheel away from the curb. Your wheel will rotate counterclockwise, and the back of your front tires should hit the curb. This creates a “lock.”

When uphill without a curb, turn the steering wheel like the downhill situation- towards the curb. Your car would then curve backwards into the side of the street as opposed to into traffic.

With a curb always turn your wheel so if the car rolled down hill the first thing to touch the curb is the front wheel. This rule applies if facing uphill and down hill. I add this answer because drivers get confused or forget if they think in terms or turning right or left. Without a curb turn your wheel so the downhill part of the car will roll into the sidewalk and not traffic. One way to master this technique is to park the car and visualize the fastest way to stop the car if it rolled. With a curb it is a front wheel, without a curb it is the back wheels. Mentally you have to take a few minutes and run through the process.

When there is a curb, if the car were to start rolling on it’s own, you would want the curb to act as a “stopping block” for the front wheels – you wouldn’t want the car to roll out into traffic. No curb – park with the front wheels turned so as to allow the car to roll off the road (out of traffic).

From what I remember, uphill, turn away from the curb, downhill, towards the curb, no curb don’t have a clue (I think the opposite of what you do with a curb), and always set the parking brake.

Turn your wheels towards the curb. That way, should your car start to roll, it will hit the curb instead of rolling out into traffic.

I believe that you always turn your wheels towards the curb. Also, you should engage the parking brake.

Always make sure they are facing the curb side of the road and engage the parking brake.
