Why in the 18th Century did the British use torture executions on nonviolent rebelling slaves in the West Indies?

In the 18th century, particularly in Antigua and Barbuda, Prince Klaas, also known as King Court, sought autonomy for the enslaved people of this East Caribbean British territory. The enslaved individuals were skilled in clearing fields, cultivating sugar cane, and operating boiling rooms to produce sugar extract, which was then exported to England for tea, a product that was taxed in the American colonies. However, the people of Antigua and Barbuda desired freedom and control over their own lives. Instead of respecting this aspiration for liberty, the British enslavers resorted to brutal executions, including burning slaves alive and torturing them using the spinning wheel, a method that involved breaking every bone in the body and ultimately leading to a painful death. What motivated the British to employ such extreme cruelty on this beautiful Caribbean island, inflicting such torture on those who were merely seeking their freedom?

Because they were scared.

Btw any rebellion was not nonviolent. But Klaas’ plotting may have been exaggerated by his accusers anyway.

Why did the tribes in Africa sell them to slavers in the first place? Oh yeah, so they could steal all their rivals’ possessions (which ostensibly you’re fine with).

After 1807, the British Royal Navy actually patrolled the west coast of Africa to stop the slave trade.

Who else on Earth did that at the time?

Did you know?

The natives of North and South America as well as Africans owned slaves prior to ever meeting a European? I think not!
