will i save gas using overdrive?

I have a 1998 Nissan Altima GXE with an automatic transmission. I read somewhere that using overdrive can help save gas. What exactly is overdrive, and how does it contribute to fuel efficiency? When should I engage overdrive, and at what speeds is it most effective? Are there any disadvantages to using overdrive that I should be aware of?

Overdrive is a low gear in your transmission. Just means the engine doesn’t have to work quite as hard. Yes it will save you gas, use it on the highways for better savings. If you use it in town your engine might not work at it’s top potential. Some vehicle transmissions have this feature work automatically, if yours is like that you don’t have to do anything unless you pull a trailer, then you should turn it off.

D is your overdrive gear 1 2 & 3 are your lower gears and you would use them to pull a heaver load, for instant’s start of in 1 when the engine rev’s up put it in 2 do the same thing for 3, just like shifting a standard without the clutch. Dano, never slam an automatic thru 12&3 when in a race? but yea I do know what you mean. I did have a car that had PRNOD123, so if O is not there then D is the highest gear.

Overdrive allows the transmission to shift into a higher gear and reduce engine speed. This is great for cruising speed but not so good for power. Most automatics will automatically shift down when you hit the gas peddle hard, so why not use it.

you are already using it but you don’t know. It does save gas. it shifts to overdrive above 45 or 50 mph. It is your 4th gear in your car. It makes the engine run slower than the wheels.

the definition of overdrive is: less rpm input than output.. i will demonstrate this for a 4 speed overdrive auto trans

1st gear- 3.00:1

2nd gear- 2.00:1

3rd- 1.00:1

4th (overdrive)- 0.75:1

basically the input shaft (attached to the engine via clutch or torque converter) turns slower than the transmission tail shaft (connected to the driveline, then differential. so for every 3/4 rotation (in this example) on the input shaft, you get 1 revolution of the transmission tailshaft which means less engine rpms=ing less gas used.

Overdrive turns the driveshaft faster than the crankshaft. Yes it saves gas. Use it all the time.

overdrive is when you car seems to coast instead of slamming the break on. you will notice that the car goes alot further when you aren’t even using the gas? that is overdrive. yes if youlearn to do it right you can save. you don’t use it when you are coming to a turn or stop you let off the gas early and it will still go quite fast and then that is saving. its like you are driving 70 and your turn is quite abit up there you can let go and let it come down itsself. that is not using the gas peddle. its hard to explain.

usually over drive trans, automatically shifts into overdrive when it needs to. if you press the button to turn over drive off it will actually use more gas. and may effect the overall performance of the trans.
