Can I use Pedialyte instead of water with formula?

I have a 4-week-old baby who has been diagnosed with a viral infection. Per our doctor's instructions, he is currently receiving 1-2 ounces of Pedialyte several times a day due to diarrhea and a decreased appetite. However, he is having difficulty accepting the Pedialyte. I would like to know if it is safe to mix his formula with Pedialyte. Specifically, can I substitute the 4 ounces of water that I normally use to prepare his powdered formula with Pedialyte once or twice a day?

No, if you use pedialyte instead of water the baby will get too many mineral salts and not enough water, that can cause dehydration and other problems.

You can mix 2oz of prepared formula with 1-2oz of pedialyte.

There are better rehydration solutions than pedialyte though:

http://rehydrate.org/solutions/homemade.htm

To prevent too much liquid being lost from the child's body, an effective oral rehydration solution can be made using ingredients found in almost every household. One of these drinks should be given to the child every time a watery stool is passed.

Ideally these drinks (preferably those that have been boiled) should contain:

* starches and/or sugars as a source of glucose and energy,* some sodium and* preferably some potassium.

The following traditional remedies make highly effective oral rehydration solutions and are suitable drinks to prevent a child from losing too much liquid during diarrhoea:

* ʙʀᴇᴀsтmilk* Gruels (diluted mixtures of cooked cereals and water)* Carrot Soup* Rice water - congee

A very suitable and effective simple solution for rehydrating a child can also be made by using salt and sugar, if these ingredients are available.

If possible, add 1/2 cup orange juice or some mashed banana to improve the taste and provide some potassium.

Molasses and other forms of raw sugar can be used instead of white sugar, and these contain more potassium than white sugar.

If none of these drinks is available, other alternatives are:

* Fresh fruit juice* Weak tea* Green coconut water

If nothing else is available, give

* water from the cleanest possible source (if possible brought to the boil and then cooled).

maybe half and half 2 oz of water and 2 oz of pedialyte---to mix with the formula. I hope he feels better soon, sorry your little one is having such a hard time of it. But I am not a doctor, so am not qualified to say for sure.

No, he's getting the pedialite for the xtra fluids, he's losing with the diarrhea. If you mix it with the formula, he won't be getting xtra fluid. Try some flavored stuff! Good luck, I hope your little guy feels better!

If your doc says it ok then i would. But not every time he gets a bottle and only mix in the amount your doc says to.

i wouldn't do it..

try mixing a little bit of sugar with the pedialyte.

i would mix a half teaspoon for 2oz for my kids when they were babies.. babies crave sweet.. so this should help.

i hope he gets better soon.. viral infections are no fun ?

poor little guy
