can you go to college without a high school diploma?

Is it possible to attend college without a high school diploma or a GED? What are the alternatives for individuals seeking higher education without these traditional qualifications?

I was denied a diploma because I couldn’t pass the states standardized test. No Child Left Behind, my f***** foot (thank you Bush). 4.0 GPA, Student Court, Student Government, Student Council, etc…I was by no means an academic problem in school.

Anyhoo, I stayed until the very last day of high school, took my finals, and passed every one of them and completed each of my courses. My counselors let me in on a little secret: the Certificate of Completion.

Trick is you have to first use that in a community college or trade school (though you’re free to transfer to a university when you’re ready). Worked out for me because due to my job, I couldn’t leave for a university yet, and had full intentions of going to a community college first anyway.

Kevin: Why would an employer care that you didn’t have a high school diploma if you could bring them a college degree? The issue isn’t whether you’ll increase your employment opportunities (you will), but whether you’ll be eligible for admission to the colleges that interest you. If you don’t have a high school diploma or a GED, most schools will require you to pass a basic skills test known as the ABT, or Ability to Benefit Test. Colleges that want to participate in the Federal Student Aid program are required to be selective in their admission – they can only accept students who can demonstrate that they are capable of performing college level work. There are a few different standard ABT tests out there, but they all test things like basic math, grammar skills and writing ability – those are the basic, fundamental skills that you’ll need to succeed in school. Generally speaking, a community college would be your best bet for starting out. Many of them have an “open admissions” policy, in that they will automatically accept any student who can pass the ABT exam. You can either stop with the associate’s degree, or you can transfer on to a 4-year school to earn your bachelor’s. Good luck to you!

Depends. If it’s a Community College then yes. Most of the time they allow anyone. Even if they don’t have a GED. It’s public schooling, they can’t deny you for registering.

I have my GED. What I plan on doing is going to a community college until I get my associates degree. Then transfer to a University.

Typically Universities do look at your highschool education BUT if you’ve already taken college then they won’t even bother with highschool and they will just look at your college education. Can call your local community college and ask an advisor. Some offer programs to getting your highschool diploma in under 1-2 years and then the programs usually pay for parts of college once completed.

Again, for me, I completed the YES program for my GED at my community college. Upon completing it I got a free term worth of college courses (5 classes was the max) and they paid for my books.

It probably wouldn’t hurt you, since most employers would assume that if you had a college degree, you must have graduated from high school. However, I don’t know of any reputable school which would give you a degree without a diploma, so graduating from a really bad college would not help.

The only way to take college classes without a GED or diploma is to do so while dual-enrolled at a high school that allows it. With neither the GED, diploma, or working on the diploma, you can’t attend college. But if you do think you’re ready for college-level work, passing the GED should be no problem at all.

no . you need to get your GED first and in your case, i would suggest you go to a community college . community college credits are tansferable to most universities. after you get your associates degree or two yrs of community college, youcan transfer to a university for your last two yrs of college.
