Condensed electron configuration for Lu3+?
What is the condensed electron configuration for the Lu3+ ion?
2 Answers
Lu3+ means you're losing three electrons. Most likely you will lose the 6s2 and 5d1 orbitals, leaving the 4f14 still entact. The noble gas before Lu is Xenon, so your condensed electron configuration would be [Xe]4f14.

Lu is Lutetium, atomic number 71 in period 6; the nearest noble gas is Xenon Xe, atomic number 54. The outer shell electrons then number 71 - 54 = 17; its configuration is
Lu: [Xe] 4f^14 5d^1 6s^2
the 3+ ion will have 3 fewer electrons, which will come from the outermost (highest n) orbitals, 2 from 6s and one from 5d
Lu^3+: [Xe] 4f^14
