Direct Buy offering a FREE 7″ Tablet? Is this a Scam?

My dad recently received a letter in the mail stating that he won a 7″ tablet from Direct Buy. However, to claim the prize, he must attend a 90-minute sales presentation. The letter also specifies that he must bring his spouse, if applicable, to receive the gift. I suspect this might be a scam, but my dad is interested in the tablet. Additionally, my mom doesn’t speak English, so she wouldn’t be able to understand the sales presentation.

Does anyone know what this sales presentation might entail? The letter mentions that attendees must be over 21 years of age and have an annual income of over $40,000. I believe this “presentation” could be a tactic to sell their membership, as it raises questions about why they would impose such income requirements to receive a gift.

If anyone has experienced a similar situation, did you attend the sales presentation? What was it about, and did you ultimately receive the item you were promised?

I believe you’ll notice that they don’t specify any kind of brand name for the tablet. They’ll probably also offer a vacation “certificate” as an alternative, and try to convince people that it’s more valuable than the tablet. These promotional vacation certificates are sold as promotional incentives for a few dollars a piece. The “free vacations” are never actually “free”, they make up phony charges (like non-existent taxes, resort fees, processing charges), and on top of that, they may try to convince people they need to get an upgrade because otherwise, they may find the accommodations less than satisfactory. (None of this happens at DirectBuy, that’s just the useless vacation certificates that are presumably more valuable than 7-inch tablets they’re offering.

As for the tablet, this is definitely going to be something with minimal capabilities, you would be embarrassed to give it to someone as a present.

In most places, a regular DirectBuy membership is around $5,000, so they want to “qualify” prospects because they don’t have much success selling to people earning minimum wage. They also want people who are likely interested in spending money on home improvements, since the DirectBuy promises that members will be able to buy such products at wholesale prices.

A surprising number of people sign up for DirectBuy membership on credit, in other words, they don’t have the money to pay for the membership, but the whole selling point of DirectBuy is that members will be able to buy high-end home furnishings (furniture, appliances, kitchen and bathroom cabinets) at “wholesale” (plus shipping and other add-on charges), but even at the “wholesale” price, the high-end stuff is a lot pricier than what more “basic” versions cost.

One of the best decisions a person can make is to avoid the DirectBuy so-called “open house” sales presentation. You’ll save time, the frustration of being forced to listen to their awful sales pitch, and you’ll save yourself from the abuse of being badgered into paying a bunch of money to join their so-called money-saving “club”.

It’s not a scam, and all you have to do is “Listen” to the pitch. Personally Direct Buy is closing so many of their Show Rooms and the discounts they offer, while good, are not that good.

They weed people out, by making sure that everyone that can show up, could potentially pay for a membership.

There is no TRICK, they do want you to get a membership, but only reason to get one is if you are planning on building a home or doing a major remodel of a home and don’t know anyone that can get you discounts on the items you want to put in your home.

So unless your dad is so weak minded that he buys anything people talk to him about, he is in no danger of accidentally buying anything.

I won’t say scam, but nobody “won” anything. It is just an incentive to listen to their pitch.

You will not get any choice in the tablet, so likely is one of those cheap Chinese ones that have Gingerbread or a neutered version of ICS.

As for the $40,000 think, they just what to be sure you can afford to join their service, and buy the goods they sell. A family with below 40K is not likely to go buy new furniture or other things, so are not good candidates for the DB club.

The tablet was very basic and has little capabilities. It’s pretty worthless. I’m embarrassed to say we succumbed to the hard sale tactics and signed up putting the fee on a credit card. We realized our mistake too late and even though the DB franchise owner said he’d let us out of the contract, he didn’t. We tried to fight the credit card charge and he fought it. Because the 3 days had elapsed he won and we were stuck. In an effort to recoup our losses, we tried 3 different times to make purchases through DB only to discover they were more expensive than local retailers for the exact products made by the same manufacturers. Don’t fall for this scam.

I’ve tried maybe 3 or 4 over the past 5 years and have spent about $5 each time. Never got anything for free. Actually if you read the ultra ‘fine’ terms of agreement’ you have to spend more than the item, and wait at least 6 months to a year. Too good to be true!

The websites RARELY give away a free laptop for you doing surveys and such. I’d bet at least ten bucks it was a scam.
