Nothing  used will sound or perform like a performance engine that has been properly prepared for the task. The Boss engines of the period (1969-1979) are still hard to beat when it comes to longevity and performance. I am a big Windsor fan, but like the Cleveland head swap (a cheap route to a boss engine). The EFI units from a 5.0 unit are easily adapted to the engine and a wide selection of transmissions are out there.

Put a carbed engine on it.  Put a 96 and older engine if you want to use one with an ECU so you can at least use a scanner to troubleshoot.  Do not forget the tank and the fuel pump. 

And if you expect a junkyard motor to run properly on first start, you are setting your hopes too high.  You will need much more than $300 to get the car running.

Put a 351 v8 in it and forget all the computer controlled crap.
