How can you reverse the effects of bleach on clothes?
I accidentally spilled bleach on three of my favorite shirts, and I'm looking for effective ways to reverse the effects. Can anyone suggest how to remove the bleach stains or restore the color? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

sorry but you can’t get bleach “out”. it is not a stain more of an extreme color fading. that’s why it is called bleach. sorry.

Wash the item in alcohol. Use the smallest amount of alcohol needed to wet down the garment and work the color from area of the garment that has not been bleached into the area that has. Do this in a well ventilated area. Works for darker colored items of a single shade, I have not tried it on lighter colors. Be careful if you are working with an item that is multi color. The alcohol will wash the color from one area into an other. Rinse out the item in water when done making sure all the alcohol has been removed. You can then launder the item or dry clean it as you normally would. Good luck! I just tried this on a pair of dark navy cotton shorts. I haven’t washed and dried them yet, but I will say that it has actually worked quiet well. I’m letting the alcohol dry first, then I plan to toss them in the dryer for about 5 to 10 mins of high heat. Bleach is used to remove stains on white clothes. But when used on colour clothes, it removes the colour as well. This process can not be reversed . The answer above is correct that bleaching cannot be reversed. There are two work-arounds I know of: First fix… This one is temporary & will need to be repeated: Magic Marker & Sharpie (or Fabric Marker) With Clean, Dry Clothing, Color the spots with both Magic Marker & Sharpie. The two different markers give you more time between fixes and a better chance to match the colors. A Fabric Marker, if you can find the right color, will hold up quite well but still needs to be touched up. Dry un-spotted clothes right away to help “set” the color. (Note well: The marker can stain other clothes in the dryer) Second Fix: Using dye remover, remove the existing color. (This makes the whole garment the same shade with no blotches) Then garment can be redyed. Note on previous comment: “alcohol is ”’flammable”’ so therefore, it is ”’not”’ a good idea to put clothing in the dryer which has alcohol on it. Unless of course, you like the idea that your house could be blown to pieces and you could end up in the hospital.” That isn’t true BECAUSE he stated to wash the alcohol off thoroughly. Read a little. Bleach does not leave a stain. It destroys the dye that colors the garment, turning that part of the garment white or a lighter shade. This is a permanent condition. The only thought I have is to completely bleach the garment white. Then, after all of the bleach is rinsed out, it could be dyed another color.

The effects of bleach cannot be reversed, you can dye the clothing back to the same color for cheap…go to the nearset supermarket and ask them to point you in the direction of the “RIT dye” it’s usually in the isle with all the cleaning products. Run a packet of this and your sweater through the washer and voila! You’re sweater will be good as new! If the black has some discoloration and has purple in it, try using a fabric marker (buy at Michael’s craft store) to fill it in! Good luck!
Unfortunately, you now have a Dalmatian inspired print shirt. You can either bleach out the rest of the shirt with a 2 to 1 solution of bleach (100% bleach will disintegrate your shirt) and let them soak overnight or you can purchase a color removing powder (RIT works best).
Also do not try to dye the shirt; it will not accept the color once bleach has been used.
I hate it when that happens! There is nothing you can do accept buy a permanent ink pen and try to color in the bleach stain with a permanent fabric pen (sometimes a Sharpee laundry pen will work for black colors); otherwise, look in the craft store for a fabric dye pen — they sell lots of colors — but getting an exact match in a color is near impossible. Sometimes I’ll just try to create a tye-dyed look on the whole garment by twisting it up in a ball and spraying on more bleach – this works especially nice with t-shirts.

That would be like bleaching your hair and wanting ot get the blond out. You can’t. You can dye it and add color back. Look at your local Wal-Mart etc. store for a product called RIT dye and see if they have anything that matches the color of your shirts. You can find it in the laudry area.

bleach lifts the color out of fabrics. they is no way to reverse it. if its jeans or something of that is one color they do have dye that you can wash your clothes in and that might help. they sell the dye at safeway an places like that.
sorry to say, your shirts are officially ruined. you have to be extra careful around bleach for just that reason. it happens to everybody at least once before they learn…..hope the shirts weren’t too expensive!

if they are cotton and you can find some permanent markers that match – you can carefully dab the color in the bleached parts. i’ve done it again and again.
