How do I connect a TV in a bedroom with no TV socket?

I would like to set up a small TV in my daughter's bedroom, but there is no TV socket available in her room; the only one is in the living room downstairs. What is the best way to connect the TV in her room? Do I need to install a new TV socket? Is it possible to use a small aerial that can be placed on the TV? Can I connect a Freeview box to that aerial? I am trying to keep costs low, so I would prefer not to call an engineer for assistance. Thank you!

You could just get a small aerial to go on the top of the TV but it might not be good enough to get all the freeview channels. I live in a good signal aerial and a small aerial wasn’t good enough in my bedroom.

I’ve got a long cable going from downstairs leading upstairs into my bedroom now with a double adapter on the socket. It doesn’t look scruffy either, you can tuck the wire into the sides and tack it to the wall. You can get the cables at argos.

Ideally you could do with an external TV aerial, that way you’ll get a brilliant TV reception. However, if you have very good reception where you live, you might get away with an indoor set-top tv aerial, but it does depend on having a good reception already, and a transmitter near by. If you honestly haven’t a clue if this is the case, then you could try this website:

http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/

Put your postcode and house number in and tick the box which says, “I am in the aerial installation trade”. If you ticked the box, you’ll be able to see each multiplex (there are 6 multiplexes – one multiplex carries about 10 tv channels) and you’ll be able to see a number out of 100 for the strength of each multiplex – if they’re all on or near 100, then you’ve got a brilliant signal and an indoor aerial “could” work well. If they’re less than 95 or 96, then you might struggle more with an indoor aerial.

If you’re still unsure, why not get one from somewhere like argos (or maybe B&Q) with a 16 day money back guarentee and try it out, and if it doesn’t work, take it back. Or call a local tv shop (not comet etc. but someone local) who might explain your options a bit over the phone. And explain you can’t afford much but wanted to know what the situation is for local reception. They’ll be helpful. Also, try the phone number on that website too, i’m sure they’ll explain things very well – but they may suggest an outdoor aerial anyway.

Ideally you need a signal from a properly installed roof mounted aerial, which is probably what you already have feeding the downstairs socket in the living room.

You can potentially run an aerial feed from the downstairs socket up to your daughter’s room (attaching the wire to the skirting board with clips, or hiding it under the carpet) if it’s convenient to do so, although there will be some loss of signal strength if the cable is really long. Aerial extension kits are available from supermarkets and places like Wilkinsons, along with splitters and adapters and such like.

A neater way of doing it (if you live in a house that is, not a flat) would be to run a separate feed from the roof aerial to your daughter’s room, but you’d need to call out an aerial installer for that unless you’re handy with tools and you don’t mind heights.

Another option would be a satellite dish and a Freesat box instead of Freeview, but again you would need an installer to come to your house. If you already have Sky, you can run a cable to a Freesat box from a spare socket on your existing dish.

I don’t recommend a small indoor aerial unless you live in an area with really good TV reception. 99% of these aerials are no better than a home made aerial (the stereotypical coat hanger or long piece of wire jammed into the aerial socket!) and even the good ones can have hit or miss reception with Freeview.

Truly, there is absolutely no assessment….simply because viewing television depends on the gunky creativeness of a Tv set entertainer who’s main concerns are budget, popularity and ratings and also to Hell with theme integrity, or, for that matter, anything creative truly.
