either 1000 or 1024; both conversions are used but if you are talking about the advertized storage of harddisks, usually 1000 is used by the mfr because it makes the drive look bigger, i.e. 1 gigabyte is a billion bytes (10^9 not 1024^3) and a terabyte is a trillion bytes (10^12 not 1024^4)
