I want to join the marines but i am scared?

ok i am 18 years old and graduate in may i am very outgoing and love to do crazy stuff. ever sense 9/11 i have wanted to go but just now old enough. i am in great shape and played football and wrestled through high school so its not the pt that will bother me. i don't know if i am just scared of leaving my comfort zone or what. iraq is not the problem for me nor is basic i think my biggest fear is not knowing what is coming and i am afraid that i will find i made a big mistake that i can not take back for four years(just a really big choice and commitment). but i really want to do this to prove to my self and to my family and friends that i can and to gain the respect for my self. i also feel like it will give me allot of self confidence and help me through life. i want to serve and help my country!! so i guess what i need to know is this normal does everyone have there doubts at times i mean is this a sign that i should not go or is this normal.

Perfectly normal. It is called the fear of the unknown. Joining the military is a life changing event. Either you are ready or you are not. Look deep down inside yourself. If this is something you really want to do, then go for it. The military will be whatever you make of it. Go in with an open mind. Embrace what you learn. You will not be alone in this. Every recruit in your platoon will be in the same situation as you. If you go in with a preconceived notion of what you believe the military should be and find out that it isnt like what you expect, then you may be in for a rough ride. I loved my time in the USMC. You will get to go places and do things that ordinary people will never get to do. I climbed Mt. Fuji, in Japan. Was on a small carrier at sea during a Typhoon, got rocked for 36 hours straight. Got to fire some of the coolest weapons made, and got paid for doing all this. Spent time in the arctic, tropics and desert. You are young. Get out and experience life. Do some things that you will remember and cherish the rest of your life. We all were scared when we first joined up, but that goes away rather quickly. If this is something you have wanted to do, then go and do it. You wont be disappointed.... Show More
Being scared is natural and it is good that you are being honest with yourself about it. With that, it is what you do with that fear that matters. Research the Marines and Marine life as much as you can and think long and hard about if joining is right for you. It might help to write out your thoughts or make a pro/con list. Talk to a recruiter and family members about it too, but be able to distinguish their potential fears for your safety from genuine advice. Unless you are KIA, joining does not mean you can't get married or have a family. If god has a plan or intended life your you then worrying about this problem is moot. If he didn't want you to join the marines you wont end up doing so. If he does, you will. I believe in God but don't believe that he dictates our lives. Other than that, I would advise waiting to join until after you finish college since you are already in.... Show More
It seems like your are just like most who join. Of course you are gonna be worried and afraid of "the "unknown". You are human. Just know that in your heart its what you want and it will happen. Do it 100% always and no matter what happens you know you didn't quit. Boot Camp is changeling but you wouldn't want to become a Marine if it was easy would you? Hell No!!! If that was the case you'd want to join the boy scouts. You gotta be a hard charger at all times and always lead!. You are ready and you should go. You want it dint you? Than Attackk with everything you got. Now talk to a recruiter and check out your options. Choose a job you would like to really do. Good luck! remember nothing in life is free. NOTHING! “Some people wonder all their lives if they've made a difference. The Marines don't have that problem.”... Show More
Honestly if your scared you can't be a marine... Not dissing or anything it takes a lot to be The Few, The Proud, The Marines.. That's why a lot can't be Marines ( The Tip of the Spear). Brother I think you will be fine after boot camp where they don't train or make Marine you are born as a Marine. If you have a family and you want to stay safe go with the Air Force or Navy ( I'm at the Naval Academy working my way to become a Marine or Navy Fighter Pilot or maybe a navy seal). Just saying why do you think when a Marine walks through the air port or walk to places people come up and shake their hands? Because they are the Brave men and women that fought for freedom and fought for liberty. They are the Few The Brave The Proud The Marines. They Know every time they wear that uniform they made a difference in the world and their country. Good luck on your mission of becoming a Brave Proud marine. If you do join the Marines or Navy I'll be your officer guiding you through trouble. HOO-RAH! GO NAVY BEAT ARMY! AND ALL! TOP GUN!... Show More
It is normal to feel some trepidation at entering a lifestyle which is new and different from what you have experienced. If you want to prove , to yourself, that you can handle it, go for it.If you're doing it to prove something to others, your family included, forget it. The Marines do not want nor need anyone who joins to prove something to others. Join to serve your country and to become a man and a Marine.Being accepted by them is a great honor which few achieve.Butterflies in the belly are normal and heathy. It means you think clearly.Take your time, think it out, talk to a Marine recruiter. My nephew chose the Navy and enlisted. After 4 years they sent him to college thru the NROTC. Now he is a Lt Commander in Naval Airand loves it.... Show More
joing the marines is most deffinately a sacrifise, and you have to remember what your sacrifising for. nobody can make the choice to join the corps but you, and a majority of people in it will say that it's the most difficult experience they've been through in they're life, but it was worth it. there's going to be times in the corps where you'll wanna quit, and you'll question if its' worth it. but the sacrifises you make, are nothing compared to what you gain in return. don't be scared. based on what you've said about your shape, and your reason for joining, you'll do fine. 🙂... It would be smart to talk to a recruiter. They can tell you what you can expect and how things will work and what you'll have to do and then you can decide from there whether or not it's right for you. It's very normal tho, my boyfriend just recently decided to join and I support him, I'm sure he's nervous and he says he'll miss me and his family and friends but it's a good decision for him, he's talked to a recruiter a few times now and says they're very helpful.... The military is not a waste of time. You will have respect, honor and a life time of memories. Also it looks good on Work and College Apps. Find something you'd enjoy the military and work towards it. Mine is the Army Rangers and I'm on my way to becoming one but it takes a lot of hard work.... Show More
change is scary. I would go talk to a recruiter and let them answer your questions then go and think it over. its not like joining a club or anything. it is life changing. Good Luck... Show More
