Illegal To Take Pictures of License Plates?

Is it illegal to take pictures of a car that clearly shows its license plate? Additionally, is it permissible to post that picture online? I want to clarify that my intention is not for any malicious purposes, but rather for fine art photography. Thank you.

No it's not illegal unless you trespass to take the photo on someones property. That does not mean that they will be happy about it but it's not illegal.

The same with photo's of people. It is not against the law to take someone's photo if they are in public. If you climb their fence and take their photo or take their photo where their is a reasonable expectation of privacy (bathroom etc) you may have problems.

Also just because it is not illegal does not guarantee they won't try to sue you it just means they will probably loose.

It is not always legal to post someone's license plate online without their permission, especially if that person's face is included in the picture. That's because the person who owns that license plate can now be identified and traced, putting that person at possible peril. That person can now be placed in different scenarios of danger. He could have his home robbed or family attacked because now a criminal knows where that person is at a certain time of day. Or, if that person is being sought by a stalker or a vengeful person, you have now placed that person where he can be found. You, the photo taker, would now be liable for any actions taken against that person because you, by placing his license online, have told the world information he wanted kept private. So yes, if nothing happens, chances are, you won't have to worry. But, if something happens because of your online post, then you are at fault.

I agree with the others in that I would not like to have my license plate on the internet. Is there any way that you could blur it out? It would avoid any problems with posting the picture.

It's perfectly legal, but I'd be p*ssed off if someone did that with my license plate. If you're not giving away any information about that person, how is it different from just seeing that plate out on the street in person anyway?

It'd probably be best just to ask permission of the owner, to be sure they're ok with it.

Wouldn't this be handled the same as a photo of someone's building? If you are taking the picture in a public place, I don't think there's a problem.

Gee. I'd better watch this question, as I have posted a few photos of plates on Flickr myself.

I just saw a picture of my truck(license plate legible) with 2 militia men standing behind it holding assault rifles, with the headline " more armed men arrive at refuge" I am not associated with the militia. Do i have any recourse here? I am very upset. I only went there to see what this stand off was all about.

if I go and visit my relative at her apartment and her landlord trys to take my license plate with out my approval is she in the wrong . can I do anything

No, it is not; however, you should use discretion when displaying those photos. If they are to be put on the web or published in any fashion, they should be blurred out as a courtesy to the vehicle owner, unless you get permission from them to display it.
