In Firefly, what is Mal’s tattoo?
In the episode "Trash," we catch a glimpse of Malcolm Reynolds' tattoo on his right hip/upper thigh when YoSaffBridge leaves him stranded in the desert without any clothes. Can anyone clarify what this tattoo represents?

Actor Nathan Fillion has a tattoo in that location, which he got when he was 19 and now regrets, and is based on some Egyptian motif – according to this site

most other websites call it an Egyptian glyph.
So, how that tattoo fits with the character of Malcolm Reynolds – perhaps also Mal once got an Egyptian glyph tattoo of some kind.

What the heck is that tattoo?
according to an answer he gave at some convention
He (Fillion) got it when he was 19, it was a peace symbol with Egyptian hieroglyphics (he said he likes ancient technologies) and now he regrets it.
