In general, electronegativity tends to decrease?
Which of the following statements correctly describes the general trend of electronegativity on the periodic table?
- Electronegativity tends to decrease from bottom to top on the periodic table.
- Electronegativity tends to decrease from top to bottom on the periodic table.
- Electronegativity tends to decrease from left to right across a period.
- Electronegativity shows no regular trend across the periodic table.
- Electronegativity tends to decrease from right to left across a period.

Electronegativity decreases right to left, and from top to bottom.
If you wanna know why, it has to due with the fact that some atoms can hold more electrons closer to the nucleus ie “electron loving”. Fluoride is the most electronegative as it wants electrons. However as you start to go to the bottom, electronegativity decreases as the atomic orbitals that hold the electrons are further away from the nucleus and unable to hold electrons close.
