power4gear high performance vs. balanced battery?

Which is preferred? I have no idea what the first one is, but on my last laptop i used the latter. WHile using the first, the battery menu states that my power option could reduce battery life. Not sure what to do to prevent that. Also, while clicking to switch to balanced battery, it does not say this. What is the difference and why does my battery info say this? any help would be great. Thanks
