Relationships in English : If a lady is my aunt then what am I to her?

The only possibility I can think of is that I’m her nephewBut the word aunt can be even used to refer any elderly women who could be your mom’s age, even my friend’s mom for example

You could also be her niece – you don’t say whether you are male or female. The word isn’t used to refer to elderly women, not in English-speaking countires. Sometimes there is an ‘honorary aunt’ who is given that title and then it is usually a close friend of the mother (who would be pretty much the same age as the mother, not and elderly woman)In some latin countries, and in Polynesian countries, it is considered good manners to refer to all elderly women as ‘aunt – or ‘tia’ and all elderly men as uncle, or ‘tio’, but doesn’t happen in English relationships.... Friend,English is not a perfectly language in all respects. It has only 26 letters in its alphabets . Certain sounds even can not be properly written. Similarly the relationships like Auntie and uncle are confusing .you have to ask again certain question to make sure who the person is , and how is related to you.To call elders auntie is a gesture of respect only.Suppose one is the third son in the six , his father has.To know this you can not get an answer by asking any direct question. You have to indirectly ask ” are you the second son?”. thenyou may get the answer ” No, I am the third son.”Similarly you have a word ‘SIN’ in English. What is the opposite of it or antonym? Exact word is not there.you have to get along . That is all.... Show More

The literal meaning of aunt is your mother or father’s sister, or their sister-in-law. That makes you either their niece or nephew. You are quite right that the term is also used as a way to describe a special person in a child’s life, such as a good family friend. Though you may for example, call your Mom’s college roomate Auntie, or Aunt Susie, it isn’t likely that she would refer to you as her niece/nephew.... Show More
