Semipermeable membrane. Name solution where net flow will occur?
A semipermeable membrane separates two aqueous solutions at 20 °C. For each of the following cases, determine the solution into which a net flow of water will occur (if any). Assume 100% dissociation for all electrolytes.
-
Solution A: 0.10 M Al(NO₃)₃
Solution B: 0.20 M NaNO₃ -
Solution A: 0.10 M CaCl₂
Solution B: 0.50 M CaCl₂ -
Solution A: 0.10 M NaCl
Solution B: 0.10 M KBr
For each case, identify:
- The group where there is net flow towards Solution A,
- The group where there is net flow towards Solution B, and
- The group where there is no net flow.
Thank you for your help!

We had different numbers but the key is to multiply the Molarity by how many ions that are in each formula.
For the first set: (0.10 M)(4) = 0.40 M && (0.20 M)(2) = 0.40 M so there will be no net flow
For the second set: Since their both CaCl2, it looks like the lower molarity will flow into the higher.
For the third set: (0.10 M)(2) = 0.20 && (0.10 M)(2) = 0.20 .. KBr and NaCl both have 2 ions. There won’t be any net flow
