Semper Fidelis tattoo for non Marines?

I’m interested in getting "Semper Fidelis" tattooed on my arm, along with a design I’m currently conceptualizing. Although I’m not an active service member, I have a deep appreciation for the Latin language. I already have "Memento Mori" tattooed on my forearm, which is one of my favorite phrases.

I’m curious to know if anyone would have an issue with me getting this tattoo, considering that the term "Semper Fidelis" isn’t exclusively owned by the U.S. military. I want to clarify that I have no intention of claiming to be a Marine or parading around as one. Additionally, the design I’m envisioning does not resemble the U.S. Marine Corps insignia in any way; it relates more to my identity as a Leo and symbolizes my commitment to being faithful to my friends and family.

Yeah it’s not copyrighted but it is the official motto of the Marine Corps.

If you don’t go parading around impersonating a Marine than I don’t think it’s a big deal. But others will naturally assume that you are, and that could be a problem. Especially if you run into a former Marine, retired Marine or an active duty Marine. This tattoo idea has the potential to physically harm you.

Most Marines would have a problem with that, considering that the Marines take “Semper Fidelis” very seriously.

That’s because the title Marine is not given, it’s earned. Some Marines would allow that if you have a family member or friend that is currently in. Drill Instructors won’t even let recruits say that until they earn the title Marine, at least that is what my Senior Drill Instructor did with my platoon.

As a Marine myself, I really don’t have a problem with it, if that is what you truly believe, then go for it.

Semper Fidelis is something that all can live by but just remember that it is almost completely known as a Marine motto so if you have it just don’t go around saying that you are one

Of course its ok to get a “Semper Fidelis” tattoo. Marine or not. It originated in France and was and is used by many varied corps, towns, cities etc in Europe. It simply portrays that the wearer is “Faithful” to whatever cause or belief he/she stands for.

Latin is a big language. Choose something else. Unless you were Corp, or lost someone who was in the Corp…don’t do it. You’ll have to explain it away for the rest of your life.
