What we found is that the term 'Anjin-san' was used in James Clavell's epic novel "Shogun." It was the name given to Blackthorne, which means "Pilot." Pilot Major John Blackthorne (Richard Chamberlain), an Englishman whose Dutch ship wrecked off the Japanese coast.
The author of Shogun, James Clavell, has styled most characters after real people. William Adams—the first Englishman in Japan—is the inspiration for Blackthorne, while Tokugawa Ieyasu is Toranaga’s model.
William Adams is often referred to as the first Englishman in Japan, or as the Englishman who went to Japan in the year 1600 and became a Samurai.
According to the Foreign Service Institute (FSI), Japanese is one of the five hardest languages for English speakers to learn, along with Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, and Cantonese.
