Very bad ascessed tooth with facial swelling?

I woke up yesterday morning with a severely swollen face and intense pain. A few weeks ago, I cracked a tooth but couldn’t afford to see a dentist yet since I only get paid once a month as a temporary state employee. Yesterday, I went to the ER and was prescribed antibiotics, but the swelling has worsened today.

I’ve tried calling local dentists to see if anyone would work with me on a payment plan, but without near-perfect credit, I have to pay in full on the day of the visit. Unfortunately, that’s not an option for at least another week or so.

My question is, what can I do in the meantime if these antibiotics don’t seem to help? I understand that this type of infection can spread and become quite dangerous, and I’m really concerned about my health deteriorating because of this tooth. Are there any home remedies that might help alleviate the pain, reduce the infection, or control the swelling? Has anyone else been in a similar situation? I’m just trying to figure out if I’ll be okay for the next week until I can get this tooth pulled.

It’s disheartening that in this day and age, access to proper medical care is still so tied to financial constraints. Thank you in advance for any advice or insights!

Honestly if you let it get worse then no dentist will touch it until the infection goes down. Doctors will usually prescribe an antibiotic first to take then take of the tooth. I know you’re in a hard place right now but you have to try and get it taken care of as soon as possible. I’ve seen it where people have let it go so long that the infection caused a huge void in the jawbone. I don’t want to scare you but you need to understand how serious this is if you don’t get it taken care of ASAP. If you know you can for sure see the dentist in a week then you can wait as long as you keep taking the antibiotic and if the area bothers you which i’m sure it does then gently gargle w/ a warm salt water rinse and you can rinse often as you need to. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

Let me see if I understand: you had an abscess and went to your dentist. You got an antibiotic and have been taking it the way you were instructed. And now your face is more swollen? If that’s right, you need to be seen by your dentist again. Now. You may need a different antibiotic. You may need to have the abscess opened and drained. You should be feeling a bit better by now, not worse. Do not wait; this is not “normal” and it will not resolve on its own. Do not wait until Friday. It is ok to call your dentist over the weekend. There is likely someone “on call” who may see you, call in a new prescription, or make arrangements for you to be seen first thing Monday morning. In the meantime, continue the antibiotic until your dentist tells you otherwise. You can rinse with warm salt water (1/2 tsp salt in 1 cup warm water) 4-5 times daily. Do not use warm compresses on your face unless specifically told to by your dentist. This can often cause more harm than good. Try to keep eating: soft foods, lots of liquids. Milkshakes, pudding, soups, etc. Do not wait!

Hello…Ok, first, unless your considered in a very serious situation, no dentist will attempt to deal with the abscess until the antibiotics have done their job and that may take a week or two….The reason being is that they don’t want to cause an excessive amount of infection to be released into your blood stream as that could be “very” serious….Taking the antibiotics reduces the infection and at the same time fortifies your system against the infection that will get into the blood stream….As for the money issue, I understand that issue. I would suggest that you contact the “Out Patient Clinic” of the nearest Dental College…they will provide the services you need and the cost can be between totally Free to very low, depending on your financial situation. Good luck and I wish you well….The Denture Pro.

For the pain, go to a pharmacy and buy Oil of Clove. Rub it on and around the painful tooth. If you can get in to see one, a dentist may prescribe heavy-duty painkillers along with antibiotics for the infection. The antibiotics prescribed by the ER won’t work “overnight.”

The ER has a dentist on call. You might have to return and plead your case. They are legally bound to treat you but getting that done might be a process painful in its own way.

If you have a dental school in your area, sometimes they have free care available, so call them. And keep calling dentists, there may be one who will pull the tooth with a payment plan, especially one of the large group practices who take medicaid.

Can you ask your employer for a pay advance, sometimes they’ll do it for a medical emergency. Try that too.

Good luck.
