My toenail is growing backwards… Help?
My big toenail seems to be growing backward—yes, backward. It looks normal at first glance, but the area where the nail grows out is swollen and red. On my other big toe, I’ve trimmed the nail twice, but this one keeps getting shorter and shorter. I haven’t cut it since October, and I would never trim my toenail this short myself.
I’ve experienced this issue once before and consulted a podiatrist. At the time, the doctor agreed it appeared my toenail was growing into my skin rather than outward, though he admitted he hadn’t seen this happen before. He removed part of the nail to investigate but didn’t find anything unusual. He then prescribed me antifungal medication, suspecting a yeast infection, which resolved the problem. The swelling subsided, and my nail started growing normally again. However, I had a severe allergic reaction to that medication, and my doctor warned me that taking it again could be life-threatening.
Now, I’m unsure how to address this issue. I haven’t had any recent injuries to my toenail, though I do snowboard and horseback ride often. I’m at a loss for what to do next. I’d appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thank you!

I started having ingrown toenails a lot when I was in high school. I kept going to the doctor to have him surgically clip it and sometimes even treat the nail bed on the edges with a type of acid so the nail would grow back a little more normal. Over time the issue just kept coming back. Last year I had one permanently removed and I plan on having the other done this June. I should have done this the first time I had problems and just been done with it all. If you don't mind the cosmetic look of no nail, it's really not a big deal. Heck, the nail bed root grows out and even looks like a nail that's just really short anyway. Find a good podiatrist to check you out but this is likely the problem. Get them permanently removed and as an added bonus you won't have to clip those terrible thick nails again or worry about toenail fungus as much for the rest of your life.

dude i think i have the same problem. its freaking me out. my toenail looks like i just cut it and it looks normal but its actually not. it's getting longer but it doesnt look like it because when it grows it gets back into my toe more. if i cut the growing part then my toenail would be reallly really small.
please email me at [email protected] if you find a way to help/treat this. thanks
