In the sentence, “Atkinson’s time has since been beaten by Matt LeBlanc, who completed the same lap in the same car a tenth of a second faster,” what does the phrase “a tenth of a second” mean? Could you please explain its significance in this context? Thank you!

Imagine splitting a second into 10 pieces.

That’s a really short time.

So basically it’s much shorter than a millisecond.

It’s a measurement of time. Same as dividing a meter into centimeters or millimeters or an inch into 1/8 or 1/16. It’s just taking a larger unit and breaking it into smaller ones. So a tenth of a second is well, .1 of a full second.

And also, a millisecond is 1/1000 of a second, so it is 100 times shorter than a tenth of a second.

There a 100 milliseconds in 1 second. One tenth of a second is 10 milliseconds

It means he beat him by 0:00:10 seconds faster which is less than a second. It is a tenth of a second.

One-tenth of a second is called a “decisecond” (not to be confused with ten seconds which is called a “decasecond”) However, in common parlance, simply saying “tenth of a second” is considered quite acceptable for nearly all applications.
