What is the maximum range of the Mosin-Nagant rifle?

What is the maximum effective range of the Mosin-Nagant rifle? Can it maintain accuracy at distances up to 1,000 yards? Additionally, what factors can influence its performance at such ranges?

NO NO NO. Anyone that says a Mosin-Nagant is accurate out to 1000 yards is an idiot. It takes a $10,000 purpose built rifle AND purpose made ammunition AND Marine sniper training for an M40 sniper rifle to be accurate out to a 1000 yards, why in the hell would anyone think a $120 used, surplus, mass produced, WWII rifle would be accurate that far? Even a brand new Mosin-Nagant, off the soviet factory line, specially selected for sniper usage, with WWII era sniper scope is probably accurate only to about 600 yards. Unless you get lucky, a surplus one at a gun show with decent ammo will only get you 400 yards at best and that would be with a scope added on a rest.

The reason that Mosin-Nagants have 1000m markings on their sights is due to old tactical thinking. It idea is that if you had a mass of soldiers shooting at another mass of solders 1000 meters away, you can exchange what is basically indirect volley fire. Has any ever tried to aim a mosin with the sight set to 1000 meters?

I a sure that if you angled your mosing nagant at a 45° angle and shot it the bullet would travel a mile or more, but you won’t be able to aim it at anything.

I’m sure, if you took a Mosin-Nagant, replaced the barrel with a modern heavy barrel, changed the bolt and receiver into modern ones that were milled for more precise fit, replaced the stock with a heavy target stock, and added a Swarovski Z6 5-30x50mm scope (see link below), you could hit a target the size of a large human at 1,000 yards… provided you spend a few years practicing that exact shot.

http://www.amazon.com/Swarovski-Optik-5-30X50-Rifl…

Of course, then you don’t really have a Mosin-Nagant. You’ve got a custom-build rifle chambered for 7.62x54mmR.

The maximum EFFECTIVE range for a Mosin-Nagant, using iron sights on a human-sized target, is going to be in the 200-500 meter range. It’s going to depend on whether the Mosin-Nagant you have has been worn out from use, or kept in relatively good shape, and on the skill of the shooter. For hunting deer, a Mosin-Nagant is a 200 yard gun, at best.

However, if you were to shoot the gun at a 45 degree angle, the bullet might travel several miles.

its important to realize that every gun is different, even if they are the same model. the mosin nagant 91/30 was actually used as a sniper rifle by russian troops during WWII, go watch enemy at the gates. there have been unconfirmed kills out to 1000 meters, and the sights do adjust to that range as well. the finnish m39s are generally considered the most auccurate of all mosin variations. i cant speak too much on the auccuracy of the sks, but i do recall hearing something about basing later sniper rifles on it. an ak isint necesslaraly better than an sks, but most people prefer them because the ak as some distinct advantages, external magazines, fully automatic fire (on the origional), etc

The Mosin Nagant is very capable of making 1000 yard shots. You can watch them all day long on YouTube both open sites and scoped. The best answer says anyone you thinks that is an idiot. Well I am here to say I am far from an idiot. I can make that 1000 yard shot again and again as I have done it myself.

Your limiting factor is the sights on a standard 91/30. Even off a rest in perfect conditions, it’s hard to come close to the rifle’s mechanical accuracy at 100 yards. I think consistently accurate fire on a man sized target is probably unrealistic past 300 yards or so. These are impressive results from a scoped “sniper” version. Reliable hits out to 800 meters are impressive from any non-competition rifle. Assuming the video isn’t faked, my respect goes to the shooter as well. The average Mosin isn’t going to shoot out to 1,000 meters, but with the right rifle, and the right shooter, it obviously can reach out much farther than you would expect.

I’ve hit a 1 ft x 1 ft target using iron sights on a Nagant at 500 yards. It all depends on the condition of the rifle you get. Remember, some of those old ones shot corrosive ammo through them and it took its toll on the barrels. Actually, I think SKS and AK-47 are almost on equal playing fields as far as performance. The AK-47 tho can tolerate a little more abuse than an SKS, like dirt in the action, and so on.

yes it can be accurate up to 1000 yards, with a maximum range of roughly 2 miles.

Edit to add:

First you have to determine what you consider ‘accurate’ at 1000 yards.

There are people who shoot with iron sights at targets 1000 yards away, targets that are 6 foot tall and 6 foot wide.

There is a sport called NRA High Power Rifle Shooting that uses iron sighs and shoot targets at 1000 yards.

http://competitions.nra.org/documents/pdf/compete/…

Go to their championship at Camp Perry. You will find guys who using an M1A, M1 Garand, springfield 1903, Mauser, or maybe a K-31 can put 9 out of 10 rounds into the bullseye, which is roughly the size of a dinner plate.

Take the guys there, hand them a Mosin-Nagant (a quality one, like a Finnish one, or one of the ones Remington made for the Tzar) and let them work up some handloads. They’ll be hitting bullseyes at 1000 yards soon enough. Maybe they’ll only get 7 out of 10. But they’ll be hitting a target that an average shooter with a tricked out ‘sniper rifle’ can’t hit at half that distance.

Their biggest problem would probably be utilizing the crappy iron sights, but again bad sights don’t make a rifle less accurate, they just make it harder to shoot it accurately.

The Mosin Nagant is an accurate rifle, there is no debating that fact.

Most people cannot shoot very accurately, many individual Mosin Nagants are in rough shape due to heavy use followed by years of storage. Most people shoot ammo in their Mosin Nagants that isn’t conducive to top notch accuracy.

None of the above facts change the initial fact that the Mosin Nagant is an accurate rifle,

Similarly, plenty of great competitive shooters who use OPTICS shoot 1000 yards regularly. Find one of them and hand them a Mosin Nagant with a scope…even the crappy PU “sniper” scope, and they’ll be hitting targets at 1000 yards shortly

The Mosin Nagant is accurate to 1000 yards…if the shooter is. Obviously, if your surplus rifle is counter-bored or you shot some corrosive ammo and then didn’t bother to clean it you will have some issues, but plenty of surplus rifles who have good barrels are capable of shooting at 1000 yards.

As always it depends on the individual rifle and the individual shooter. The mosin is in theory capable of accuracy out to 1000 yards. That doesn’t mean your mosin will be. The maximum lethal range is around 2 miles bu not accurate and would need the thin air at high altitude.

The markings on the mosin are not in meters or yards, there is no reason that you couldn’t touch a gong at 1000 yards, opinion does not play into reality
