An overflowing flask?
A glass flask with a volume of 1000 cm³ at a temperature of 0.500 °C is completely filled with mercury, which is also at the same temperature. When both the flask and the mercury are heated together to a temperature of 52.0 °C, a volume of 8.05 cm³ of mercury overflows from the flask. Given that the coefficient of volume expansion of mercury is β_Hg = 1.80 × 10⁻⁴ /K, calculate β_glass, the coefficient of volume expansion of the glass.

∆V = V(flask)*[β(Hg) - β(glass)]*∆T
∆V = 8.05 cm³
V(flask) = 1000 cm³
∆T = 52.0 - 0.500 = 51.500 ºC
8.05 /(1000*51.500) = 1.80*10^-4 - β(glass)
β(glass) = 1.80*10^-4 - 1.563*10^-4 = 2.37*10^-5 /ºC
