Bad engine mounts or tranny?
I purchased a 1998 Acura CL about a year ago. A couple of months after the purchase, I began experiencing rough shifting from first to second gear, while the other gears shift more smoothly. I had the transmission serviced, but that did not resolve the issue. The dealer informed me that my engine mounts are completely worn out. Could the worn engine mounts be the cause of the rough shifting? If so, what would be the estimated cost for a mechanic to replace the engine mounts?

Yes it can cause rough shifting. There are at least two upper motor mounts that keep the engine from rocking back and forth. When the engine is reved, the centripetal force causes the engine to lean to one side. The motor mount prevents this from being too severe. With a worn motor mount, the engine leans too far and when it shifts, the RPMs drop reducing the centripetal force. The engine rocks the other way which causes the torque converter to lose its centripetal force causing a hard shift.
It’s your engine mounts. if the mounts are worn then they cant completely support the weight of the engine and will increase weight and stress on the transmission(given that Your transmission mounts are good). if you don’t replace them it will cause the problem to get worse. I’m not sure how much it will cost to be serviced but engine mounts are about $60and they’ll probably charge an hour of labor(something like $90, $120 at a dealer). so, if you do the math your looking at about $150-$180.
Worn engine mounts and transmission mounts can indeed cause strange shifting. The worn mounts will allow the engine to move and possibly put the drive train in a momentary bind.
