It is a request for other people to “give him a break” or be more gentle with him, something he might say if he feels overwhelmed. I think people usually would intend it more as a joke than as a serious request. It is not a common American expression now, but I think it used to be common.

I think it’s typically used in the American South more than in other parts of the country, to express surprise, like “oh, my goodness!” Sometimes it’s humorously spoken in exaggerated dialect, such as “Lawsy mussy me!” (Lord have mercy on me!)
