Boiling prawns and shrimp

This is probably the most common method of cooking prawns and shrimp, particularly the smaller types.

It is really important not to overcook the prawns, although they need to be properly cooked at the same time.

Depending on the size, prawns and shrimp should be cooked in a matter of minutes. Larger prawns will take a few more minutes.

You can tell when prawns and shrimp are cooked, as they will turn a pink colour.

As a guide, small – medium sized shrimp will take 3 – 4 minutes, large shrimp will take 5 – 8 minutes and jumbo shrimp or prawn will need 7 – 8 minutes cooking time.

To boil 1 lb of prawns or shrimp carry out the following steps:

Fill a saucepan with 2 litres of water and add 2 tablespoons of sea salt.

Bring the water to the boil and add the prawns or shrimp. You may leave them shelled and veined if you wish.

Reduce the heat, cover the pan and simmer the prawns or shrimp for 3 – 6 minutes, depending on the size. Start counting once the water has begun to boil again.

The prawns or shrimp will be cooked when they float to the top and the flesh has turned white or opaque throughout. Cut one in half to check.

Remove the prawns or shrimp from the heat immediately and run them under cold water for a few seconds to stop the cooking process.

Once the prawns or shrimp have cooled they will be ready to peel and eat.

i don’t know anything about salmon but smothered shrimp is really good and easy to make. You should probably just grill the salmon. to make smothered shrimp or err prawns: saute an onion in some oil after the onion starts to get soft then add the shrimp when the shrimp are done add an inch or so of water, and season with cayenne pepper, salt, black pepper and garlic. Chop up some potatoes and add them cook it until the potatoes are tender. eat it over white rice. really simple and really good. this is very common new orleans cooking and you can do the same thing with chicken if you wanted.

As with any food, it depends on the size of the shrimp. I used to work at a seafood restaurant and we boiled our tiger shrimp for 7 minutes. It worked well for us, but you could be different. Just make sure to stop boiling them when they turn bright pink. Good Luck.
